After the Clocks Fall Back, Hingham's Evenings Move to Planter's Hill and Lincoln Street

October 22, 2026

On Tuesday, Nov. 24, a guided group will walk up Planter's Hill at World's End to watch the sun set and the full moon rise, two days before Thanksgiving. The walk starts at 3:45 p.m., which for most people is still the middle of the workday.

A month earlier, the same hike runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26. The program is the same and so is the hill. The start time moves an hour and three quarters earlier. The hike is built around views of the setting sun, and the sunset moves a lot over those four weeks, with the end of Daylight Saving Time adding a full hour. Programs on the town's indoor calendar keep their usual clock times all month.

The gate closes at sunset, and sunset keeps getting earlier

World's End is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to sunset. Advance parking passes are required on weekends and holidays and strongly encouraged on weekdays. Members park free and nonmember vehicles pay $15. Through the summer, "sunset" means a long evening on the carriage paths. In November it means something else.

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026. According to timeanddate.com's Boston sunset table, the sun sets at 4:37 p.m. that day and at 4:17 p.m. by Nov. 21.

Sat., Nov. 7 Geology Walk See Trustees listing

Fri., Nov. 27 Green Friday walking tour See Trustees listing
Wed., Dec. 23 Full Moon Hike 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The guided programs are the exception to the sunset rule, and the Trustees say so on the Nov. 24 hike's event page:

"we invite you to stay after our gates have closed to enjoy a tranquil evening walk under the light of the moon with a World's End guide."

The hike runs about an hour, from Planter's Hill and back along the old cart paths. The page says white-tailed deer, red fox, raccoons and barred owls start moving into the open fields at dusk.

This week still runs on the old schedule

The last days of Daylight Saving Time are when Hingham's late-afternoon events still happen in daylight, and several fall in the next ten days.

The Hingham Fire Department holds an open house on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Station 2, the Public Safety Facility at 35 Essington Drive. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, a Halloween open house with trick-or-treating runs from 4 to 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 210 Central St. These are both listed on the town calendar.

The Oct. 26 full moon hike is the last one before the time change. It requires pre-registration, guests are asked to arrive 10 minutes early, and parking is included.

The Hingham Historical Society's Spooky Walking Tours finish the month. The Society's ticket page lists Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. for $15. It says tickets are limited and warns that the mature themes may not suit all younger guests. A separate public listing shows Saturday, Oct. 24, at the same two times for $20, and the Society's spring calendar listed Oct. 29 and 30. Check the Society's site for the night you want before you buy.

After Nov. 1, the outdoor calendar moves earlier

Once the clocks change, World's End's evening programs come close to the end of the workday. The Nov. 24 hike takes in "views of the setting sun and rising moon." With the sun now setting in the 4 o'clock hour, the hike is listed for 3:45. Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, dogs aren't allowed on the guided hike, and in bad weather the program may be rescheduled or canceled, with notice sent to the registration email.

The Owl Prowl on Saturday, Nov. 21, also requires pre-registration, and the Trustees describe it as an easy-to-moderate walk.

Nov. 21 is also the last day of the Hingham Farmers Market season. The market runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 95 Station St. through Nov. 21, according to the Hingham Anchor. That Saturday, you can go to the final market in the morning and the Owl Prowl in the evening, with sunset at 4:17 p.m. in between.

For other guided walks, World's End has a walking tour on Friday, Nov. 6, and a geology walk with an experienced geologist on Saturday, Nov. 7. The Friday after Thanksgiving brings a Green Friday walking tour on Nov. 27. Without a guide, the reservation has four and a half miles of carriage paths and footpaths, open from 8 a.m. until the sun goes down.

Indoor evenings keep their usual times

Indoor events don't move with the sunset. Their start times stay the same, and since it's dark well before they begin, they all happen at night.

The Historical Society's Candlelight Tours of Old Ordinary run Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 21 Lincoln St., with tours at 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30 p.m. each night. Each tour lasts about 45 minutes. The Society notes stairs, dim lighting and slanted floors. There are no physical tickets. Names are checked at the door, and the online confirmation serves as the receipt. Tickets are $20, and the ticket page lists all 12 date and time slots. The first tour nights come the same weekend as the World's End walking tour and geology walk, so Nov. 6 and 7 can include both a guided walk on the drumlins and an evening on Lincoln Street.

The Society's 2026 calendar also lists a lecture by Kerri Greenidge on Sunday, Nov. 15, and a Harvest Supper on Wednesday, Nov. 18. That calendar came out in the spring, so check the Society's site for times and tickets as those dates get closer.

Hingham Public Library at 66 Leavitt St. covers weeknights, also at fixed times:

  • Monday, Nov. 9, 6:30 p.m. Mindful Meditation for Managing Holiday Stress
  • Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m. An author event with Andrea Rugh
  • Tuesday, Nov. 17, 7 p.m. Joe Bagley presents "A History of Boston in 50 Artifacts"

According to its November calendar, the library is closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day and on Thursday, Nov. 26, for Thanksgiving. On Nov. 11, the town's Veterans Day celebration takes place at Town Hall, where the Veterans Council will announce the 2026 Veteran of the Year.

What's open in daylight on Station Street and Derby Street

For errands before dark, a few new and changing storefronts are worth knowing about.

The Cashmere Deal has opened a seasonal pop-up at 20 Station St. It runs through Dec. 22, Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with 50 percent off selected items, Patch reports. It's a short walk from the farmers market site at 95 Station St., so the two fit into the same Saturday morning through Nov. 21.

Union Square Donuts opened at Derby Street Shops in early September, according to Patch. Its grand opening ran Sept. 11 to 13.

At Hingham Shipyard, the original Wahlburgers closed on Sept. 30 after 15 years. The Patriot Ledger reported that a new full-service restaurant will take over the space, and a leasing executive said its name would be announced soon.

Where November ends

Thanksgiving week shows the split clearly. The full moon hike leaves at 3:45 on Tuesday. The library is closed Thursday. On Friday, World's End holds its Green Friday walking tour. A week later, on Friday, Dec. 4, the Historical Society's calendar lists Hingham for the Holidays and Christmas in the Square, which brings the town back to the Square at the start of December. The next full moon hike is on Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., a quarter hour earlier than in November.
